There are various ways to optimize websites for Search Engines. The SEO Module II (see other modules here….) is geared toward optimizing database driven websites which pages are automatically generated using data contained in a database. Ecommerce websites are the best example of such sites. Their "pages" can nevertheless be optimized very easily using keywords related to their content. Be it a product list within a category or a product page itself, SEO Module II will automatically configure SEO friendly URLs for your product and category pages, SEO friendly image name/URLs and keyword metatags.
The key to understanding Search Engine referencing is to think of them as…human beings! Actually they are now smart enough to recognize words and to connect the dots between these words throughout the content of a web page. Consequently the concept of relevance is what drives all optimization efforts: relevance between the content of a page and its title, meta tags and addressing (URL).
In other words , the more relevant the optimized wording is to the content of a page the better it is for SEO since enriching word content and their relevance is what ultimately will make Search Engine indexation work optimized.
1-SEO friendly URLs for pages
Usually, ecommerce page URLs will rely on numbers to recognize which data should be read from the database and displayed on the user's browser. These numbers, obviously, make very little sense to search engines and should be replaced with something more meaningful to them, for example keywords such as : "bakeries-and-sweets", "children-s-apparel".
Example:
A current URL like:
http://www.example.com/search/view/filter:categoryid:10?search=category
should be modified to read as:
http://www.example.com/search_category/10-bakeries-and-sweets
2-SEO friendly URLs for images
All images uploaded using the back office of the ecommerce have random generated names to guarantee unique names. These names provide little to none help for search engines to index them.
Image filenames should be changed from this:
http://www.example.com/image/view/0/0/PI8m1RvS3s0-e9IQGJ7Ems.jpg
to this:
http://www.example.com/image/view/angelsnest-home-3-christmas-photo-cards.jpg
3-Changes in your back Office (where you manage your categories and products)
When inserting a new category, the system will automatically generate a SEO friendly url based on the category or product name. The SEO friendly name of an image will either use the image caption or the product name. As for placing keywords meta names, a specific field allows you to enter up to 10 keywords per product page or per category page.
